The most storied thoroughfare in the nation, U.S. Route 66 gave birth to our freedom-fueled obsession with road-tripping. It connected the heartland to the West Coast, crossing eight states, including, for some 178 miles, ours. Today the section of historic highway that traverses the Texas Panhandle is dotted with dilapidated relics and small towns that were bypassed by the interstate that replaced it.
