Austin Animation Phenomenon RWBY Returns for Volume 10

DATE POSTED:July 6, 2026

Residents of the mystical and action-packed world of Remnant, rejoice! The team behind RWBY, the Austin-created and anime-influenced animated series, have confirmed that the long-awaited volume 10 has been greenlit.

The announcement came at this weekend’s Anime Expo during the Viz Media panel through a video teaser featuring showrunner Kerry Shawcross and cast members Barbara Dunkelman (Yang Xiao Long), Kara Eberle (Weiss Schnee), Lindsay Jones (Ruby Rose), and Arryn Zech (Blake Belladonna).

Heavily influenced by the genre of magic high school anime, the series centers on a team of young monster-hunters-in-training, lead by the ever-cheerful Ruby Rose. The show was originally created by Monty Oum for Austin-based Rooster Teeth, the groundbreaking online studio behind shows like Red vs. Blue and gen:LOCK. However, out of all its titles it was arguably RWBY that had the greatest breakout success. It ran for nine volumes, with several spinoffs, including RWBY Chibi and RWBY: Fairy Tales, and a two-volume crossover movie with the DC superheroes, Justice League x RWBY: Superheroes & Huntsman, plus multiple comic adaptations and several video games. Its homage to anime and manga was also a success in Japan, with a Japanese-language remake (RWBY: Ice Queendom) and a manga by Shirow Miwa (Devil May Cry).

However, for all its success, the series was impacted by the financial difficulties that hit Rooster Teeth. Volume 9 debuted in 2023, but fans had already knew that the studio had not committed to volume 10. By the time the show ended in a massive cliffhanger in March 2024, the studio had already announced its closure, with volume 9 being one of its final major projects.

The good news came that July, when Viz Media (Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) announced that it had acquired the rights to RWBY and would provide a home for the existing episodes and publications. It was one of several elements of Rooster Teeth’s back catalog that found homes elsewhere, and then in July 2025 studio cofounder Burnie Burns, along with Box Canyon Productions, bought back the studio name and the remaining back catalog from Warner Bros., relaunching the new roosterteeth.com.

Yet the Viz acquisition did not ensure that Shawcross (who took over the show in 2015 after Oum’s tragic death) and the team would be allowed to finish the story. However, over the past year Shawcross has constantly assured fans that they were working towards reigniting production, and that behind-the-scenes effort has now paid off. No date has been set yet for the series to debut, but it’s a certainty that the fanbase – which has stayed loyal throughout these intervening years – will be there for it.
