In the spring I went on a date with an Austin wellness entrepreneur, which was perhaps my first mistake. In his case, “entrepreneur” seemed to be less an occupation than an identity, one with its own rituals—pickleball, cold plunges—and its own accessories, the most ostentatious being his Tesla. He parked it across from the bar, visible from the patio where we drank (it’d previously been keyed by strangers). At the end of the night, after we’d closed our tabs, he offered to drive me home. I demurred. He didn’t seem impaired, but I, a one-drink wonder, certainly couldn’t have driven safely.
