On February 16, President Donald Trump reached down with his stubby finger and terminated—probably—the long and winding trail of the hardworking and colorful state Representative Briscoe Cain, Republican of Deer Park, who is running in the crowded primary field for the recently gerrymandered Ninth Congressional District. Before Trump’s endorsement of front-runner Alex Mealer, polling suggested Cain was in second but could hope for luck and a runoff.Trump’s call for Republicans to coalesce around Mealer, though, means Cain’s probably toast.
