I’ve been driving to Dripping Springs from Austin for almost three decades now, and I remember when the lone Dairy Queen on the side of U.S. 290 heralded my arrival to the quaint town. Now my landmarks are the Home Depot and the Courtyard by Marriott.What began as a far-flung settlement for three Mississippi families in the 1850s is now officially a boomtown, with a population that’s more than doubled since the 2020 census, which recorded about five thousand residents. And then there are the tourists, who come by the thousands to the self-proclaimed Gateway to the Hill Country for its natural beauty—sparkling streams, dark skies, seasonal wildflowers, spring-fed swimming holes—and, it would seem, weddings.
