The Best Way to See as Much as Possible of Texas Is to Drive Route 90

Texas contains multitudes: the desert and mountains out west, the scrubby borderlands, the coastal plains, the eastern Piney Woods and swamps. No road lets you see more of the state than U.S. 90, which extends some 763 miles across 21 counties and is so damn multitudinous that it has an alternate route through some of the more scenic and historic areas. In the fifties and sixties, road builders couldn’t help but use 90 for some of Interstate 10’s east-west routing through urban areas, where you can speed along at breakneck rates—as you should.
