Bubbles, his nostrils flaring and his cinnamon-brown flanks lathering with salt, trots and canters before breaking into a gallop across the rectangular, bare-dirt arena. His four hooves displace a plume of fine red dust that drifts upward into an overcast West Texas sky. The five-year-old quarter horse continues to run in circles until 37-year-old Tylor Skenandore pulls back on the reins, saying, “Whoa.” Bubbles skids to a faltering stop, dragging his back legs instead of firmly planting them.“We’ll have to work through it a little bit,” says Skenandore, who wears a white cowboy hat and reflective sunglasses and sports a salt-and-pepper goatee.
