One February day back in 1996, I drove across Los Angeles to interview a trio of Texas filmmakers for the UCLA Daily Bruin, my college paper. Their names were Wes Anderson, who hailed from Houston, and Owen and Luke Wilson, two brothers out of Dallas. I was nervous, but not because they were famous, which they weren’t—yet. I was nervous because I loved their new movie, an indie film called Bottle Rocket, Anderson’s directorial debut. I wanted to come across as a serious journalist, not a superfan.
