illustration of texas-shaped film reelListen, I’ve got no beef with John Wayne. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Stagecoach, Rio Bravo, True Grit—all great movies. Admittedly, I probably haven’t seen 1960’s The Alamo since a TV was wheeled into my fourth-grade Texas history class so we could watch Wayne pretend to be Davy Crockett. Even back then—even sitting among an indulgent audience of kids who were just grateful to take a break from memorizing the state’s rivers—I didn’t find The Alamo to be particularly good. It’s just too long, too riddled with inaccuracies, too padded with corny dialogue to be a great movie. But The Alamo has one thing going for it. It admirably evokes the feel of Texas, with big, booming, cannonball-size sentiments about defiance, nobility, and self-reliance that…
