In the first half of 2025, Senator John Cornyn looked like a dead man walking. In more than a dozen polls, he trailed his primary challenger, Attorney General Ken Paxton, by an average of seventeen percentage points, and there was speculation that Cornyn might be looking for an off-ramp—maybe a presidential appointment to chair some made-up task force—to save him from the ignominy of a primary defeat. Instead, Cornyn chose to fight it out, and while the fight isn’t over, his instincts look to have been vindicated.
