Last week President Donald Trump, sensitive to the threatening political situation inside a rogue, well-armed Gulf petrostate where power is wielded by a theocratic minority within a mostly symbolic democracy, reached for what has become his favored tactic: The decapitation strike. Maduro, Khamenei the elder, and then Ken Paxton.It was the morning after the attorney general had qualified for a runoff for the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by incumbent John Cornyn. Party bigwigs were bemoaning that the second round of the primary would suck up tens of millions of dollars, embitter the party’s base, and probably put Texas Republicans in a worse position to win the seat in November.
