In 1960 he was elected a state representative before he’d finished law school, and he quickly put himself in the good graces of Governor John Connally and President Lyndon Johnson. He became Speaker of the Texas House at 26, lieutenant governor at 30, and, when he was just 32, heard Johnson declare, “Ben Barnes will someday be the next president of the United States from Texas.” But just two years later Barnes lost his bid for governor, and he never ran for office again.
