Qmmunity: Magic 8 Ball Moment

Reader, I’m shaking my snot-filled head around like a Magic 8 Ball trying to figure out a good opening line. Wouldn’t you know it, but nothing’s coming up! So please take my sincerest wish that you are healthy-ish, happy-ish, and having a nice time-ish as the best welcome I can manage. By the time you read this, I’ll be more or less mucus-free, so no worries about this being the permanent state of the Qmmunity column.

Stuff that may be of interest to you but aren’t drag shows/book clubs/gay vendor markets: Equality Texas and ASHwell are offering a civic leadership collective program as part of ASHwell’s peer support program. Over seven sessions, attendees will gain knowledge on government operations, engaging with policymakers, navigating the complexities of the Texas Lege, and how to empower others to take pro-LGBTQIA action. Artists who’ve outgrown the dining room table, you may be in luck. Museum of Human Achievement, aka that warehouse behind the Canopy Complex, has opened up several studio spaces for rent. Central Texas Pig Rescue does important work, saving hundreds of pigs from abuse, abandonment, neglect, slaughter, and animal testing. Since they run on volunteer work, Round Rock Pride and drag performer Xtra have been heading out on third Saturdays for work days that ensure the environs are fit for a porcine queen. Past projects have included mulch spreading, mud spa digging, barn cleaning, and even a watermelon smash. I’m only a little bit scared, mostly delighted – Rob Anderson has a special way of unearthing and celebrating the most bonkers stuff we consumed as a culture in what some of us look back on as the greatest decade. You may know him from his bestselling book Gay Science or his TikTok videos offering wry commentary on Berenstain Bears, 7th Heaven, or Saved by the Bell. Now he’s taking to the stage with original songs, comedy, and “diabolical presentations.” We didn’t know how good we had it, so let’s roast the Nineties in all its grunge and Day-Glo glory. – Kat McNevins
