Tano Tijerina wants everyone to know that he is not going to hell. “Who’s with me on that?” shouted the Twenty-Eighth Congressional District candidate running to unseat Henry Cuellar, in the style of a football coach rallying a dispirited locker room. Before him stood around a hundred die-hard fans of Attorney General Ken Paxton, gathered for the Senate candidate’s one-off “Rally in the Valley,” cheering in response. Tijerina is an ebullient public speaker—several “WOO”s, at least one “THAT’S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT.” This is the manner in which he has just informed us that he identifies as a “beef-eating, Bible-thumping patriot.” To an average person, such declarations would register as bizarre.
