The journey that led to this issue began with a simple question, posed to the Texas Monthly editorial staff in a meeting about a year ago: How about we do something big? When we decided to focus on the Rio Grande—not the increasingly politicized border it defines but the river itself—we weren’t sure exactly where we were going. So we recruited two first-rate guides: writer Jack Herrera and photographer Jordan Vonderhaar. Jack has spent his career reporting in the borderlands, and his connection to the river runs deep.
