Robert Duvall as Augustus The word most often used to describe Robert Duvall is “chameleon.” It’s popping up, again and again, in the many tributes to the actor since his death at age 95 on Sunday, a testament to Duvall’s transcendent ability to disappear so fully into his roles. Whatever part he was playing—a Mafia consigliere in The Godfather, an abusive dad in The Great Santini, a strangely Zen, surfing-obsessed colonel in Apocalypse Now—he imbued each of them with the same lived-in authenticity, without employing any signature tics that might have pigeonholed them as a “Robert Duvall character.” His knack for immersion, although it may have kept Duvall from becoming a true leading man, made him one of the most acclaimed, most useful actors of his or any era.…
