At eight on Friday night, 76-year-old Martha Avila was at her daughter’s house. The World Cup game between Brazil and Haiti had started thirty minutes earlier, and the grandmother was in the front room of the two-story brick house on a quiet residential street in Katy’s Westgreen Park neighborhood, a community of 463 homes two miles south of Interstate 10. That was when a Tesla Model 3 sped through the front of the house, crashing through brick and glass, striking Avila. She was transported to Memorial Hermann hospital by helicopter, where she was pronounced dead.
