Unraveling a New Mystery Around an Ancient Work of Art
One of the most striking works of art in Texas, the White Shaman mural, was painted thousands of years ago on a rock wall near the Lower Pecos River. According to an archaeologist who’s studied the mural in consultation with an Indigenous group in Mexico, it tells a creation story. But according to Gary Perez, a member of the Lipan Apache Native American Church, the work is, in fact, a map of sacred sites across hundreds of miles of Texas.This week on TM Out Loud, Peter Holley talks about his story about the debate and how he navigated writing about the different interpretations.
