Standing at the edge of Hancock Springs pool, a free-flowing, spring-fed swimming pool near downtown Lampasas that opened more than a century ago, I look out over an expanse of green-blue water. There are no lanes or fancy waterslides here, and instead of chlorine, I detect a whiff of sulfur. That’s all fine with me.I breathe deeply, then take a flying leap into the pool. When I come up for air, sunlight glitters across the water’s surface like scattered crystals. I swim across and back a few times, then scramble out of the chilly water and plop onto a ledge to soak in the old-timey ambiance. Clusters of teenagers lounge beneath huge pecan trees.
