We’ve been moving at a breakneck pace here at the Chronicle, gearing up for, hitting the ground of, and finally collapsing, bedraggled and spent, after another South by Southwest, and it’s only belatedly occurring to us that we never formally introduced an important addition to the Chron family.
He’s a very handsome fella named Champ, who was adopted by Chronicle owner Nick Barbaro and Susan Moffatt in December. Champ – like the much-loved office dog before him, Hank – is a tripaw, having lost his front right leg in an origin story known only to him. It doesn’t slow him down much, though; Champ can bolt to the office’s second floor in no time, on a mission to personally inspect every trash can on the premises. He’s been in our staff box for a while now, and last Friday, he made his official debut at the Chronicle’s annual Hair of the 3-Legged Dog day party. So far, we’ve been very pleased with his work.
Also this week, we say goodbye to staples. After our printer upgraded to a new printing press, we were informed that stitching was no longer an option. Based on the countless letters we’ve received over the years regarding yea or nay on staples, this news will either be cause for rejoicing or a real blow. Either way, it’s out of our hands – and possibly yours, too, on an especially windy day. Hold on tight, y’all.
Oh, and keep your eyes peeled: Next week a new season of Best of Austin polling begins. Unfamiliar with this now-36-year-old tradition? Be sure to pick up next week’s issue for an explainer and tips on how to get out the vote.
