The town of Comanche straddles U.S. 67 on a flat, featureless stretch of a region variously known as the Western Cross Timbers, the Osage Plains, or simply the Big Country. Founded in 1858, in its early days it served as a supply depot for local ranches. The population—about 4,300 residents—has barely budged in a century.
