The exterior of Martin’s Place, in Bryan, with its original sign.A couple of years back, I helped the Texas Historical Commission identify barbecue joints that were eligible for its Texas Treasure Business Award. For a business to qualify, it needs to have been operating continuously for fifty years or more. At Martin’s Place, in Bryan, owner and pitmaster Steve Kapchinskie proudly hung his Texas Treasure certificate on the wall. Last year the restaurant doubled its eligibility by celebrating its hundredth anniversary. I missed the milestone, so I wanted to get back to Bryan to visit with Kapchinskie, his wife, Betty, and their daughter, Mandy, and apologize for my oversight. I received a grand tour of the pit room from Kapchinskie and a bite of brisket fresh off the block by one of the two old brick pits, and I got to rest awhile on…
