Qmmunity: Here’s to Another Week

Ah, yes: April showers have brought the rescheduling of many events – several that ran in last week’s column, even! Keep an eye on our online calendar to see updates as new dates roll in. As for right now, I hope you’re dry and not too put out by the shuffle. That’s this city for ya: Weather will always put the kibosh on things.

Not to be the “applications are open!” guy but, uh. Applications are open for Contracommon’s Pride-themed exhibition “You Better (Art)Work.” According to their Instagram post, this will be a “booth-style” show where each exhibiting artist gets about 10 feet of wall space and can bring shelves and such to place their creations. The show runs May 30-June 25 and though there’s a $10 application fee, there’s no cost for a booth. Apply by April 30 if you desire to “art work” with the CC folks. 

Need a new look or have some cute but not-your-style clothes cluttering thine closet? ASHwell has officially kicked off their spring/summer season clothing drive, Sock It to Me. Their emphasis is on femme fashions for young and more mature folks like sundresses, flowy button ups, breathable pants, and lightly used professional yet light footwear like boat shoes or sandals. Drop off locations include ASHwell’s clinic, Sky Candy Austin, Cute Nail Studio, and Reunion Barbershop. 

My Qmmunity space is small this week, which is fine because you might’ve noticed I wrote like 2K+ words on the fabulous Fusebox artists Andie Flores and Sam Mayer for this week’s cover story. Go give that a read, and hopefully you’ll fall just as in love with their energy as I have. Plus, Fusebox’s featuring tons of other local and queer creators in this year’s fest, so scan the schedule at your leisure. Here’s another week, my LGBTQ crew. May it be a softer one than the last. 

Amerika’s Madrigal – Native Mixtape  Thursday 9, Cheer Up Charlies

Indigo Collective ATX celebrates local and global voices through this mixtape of queer and BIPOC musicians. Join the listening event where vendors, drag, and other local orgs feature alongside the marginalized folks-focused creative service org. A portion of mixtape sales will go to the legal aid of co-founder Otofu, who’s currently being held in ICE custody. 6pm.

Geekgasm Revue Presents: Release the Kraken! Friday 10, Kick Butt Coffee

A monstrous delight awaits from Austin’s longest-running “nerdlesque” show with burlesque, drag, and even a creature costume contest. Performers include Amy Graves, Bobby Barnaby, Dat Ashe, Danny Foxtrot, Folly Parton, Goody Le’Ray, Holliday Cash, Roc Gaude, Rosie the Riveting, and host Marcia Melons. 8pm.

Shock Therapy Presents: A Tribute to Amy Winehouse x Grace Jones Friday 10, Elysium

Two titanic divas inspire this month’s eccentric drag show with performances by Munster Mash, Ethel Institution, Bubu, Jenna Talia, Tangelo, MK Ultra, Sticky Gold, and special guests Hurricane Short King and Liberty. Music by DJ BB Crux. 11pm. 

We Urge You to Dance Friday 10, Highland Lounge

Get down with this combo platter of Austin queerest nightlife party people: Homotopies (Hard Rubber ATX), Purple Matter (BÁRBARA), and leader of the pack BabiDoll. Midnight.

Mall Visigoths Night: Twisted Friday 10, Tiny Minotaur Tavern

The hottest topic at this fantasy tavern will be the Xtreme armored stylings of Nokken the Bard’s new band Khuro. Dress in Tripp pants and golden metalwork pendants. 7pm.

Solidarity Sip-In Friday 10, Epoch Coffee – Village

Raise an iced coffee alongside PSL Austin, Austin DSA, and YALLATX as the workers of the Rockwood and Anderson Starbies file their union election. 11:30am.

Texas LOVE Intergenerational Mixer Saturday 11, 1972 Pub

Join the Lesbian On-Campus Visibility and Engagement Club for this social open to everyone from Gen Z to Millennial, Gen X to Boomer, and all those in-between generations (Zoomer, Zillennial, Gen 2, etc.). 7pm.

The Masc Off Saturday 11, 29th Street Ballroom

Fare Fearless Events celebrates the masc community with this dance party featuring contests, single minglings, a dating game onstage, and plenty of fun prizes for best fits, flirtation, and lip-sync. 7pm.

Filth! Saturday 11, Hyperreal Film Club

Shop local and queer vendors in the parking lot beside OvenBird. Plus, a food drive and fundraiser for the neighborhood. 11am.

Get your giggles going at this diverse stand-up show featuring comics Clayton Maderia, Sarah Spear, Roxy Castillo, Destiny Lalane, Alexandra Sleeping, Christ Bryant, and Evan Rabalis. 8pm.

The Trans Era rams Saturday night with a hot and “horn”y fantasy drag show of Aries performers Arinna Dior Davenport, Munster Mash, Leia Sakura, and Flex Brojas. 9pm.

Log on to talk next steps with this local queer-centric safety crew. 5:30pm.

Selena Drag Brunch Sunday 12, the Brewtorium

Austin Pride’s Big Gay Drag Brunch gets a Bidi Bidi makeover for the Queen of Tejano’s b-day. Special Drag Race guest Alexis Mateo joins the cast, too. 12pm.

Picnic on the Lawn Sunday 12, the Courthouse Lawn (San Marcos)

Outside Austin, San Marcos’ queer therapy practice Lavender Space Inc. hosts a springtime edition of their monthly family dinner. Bring a blanket and enjoy food with friends – include GF and vegetarian options. 5:30pm.

Queer cinema scholars Soft Focus screen this sapphic camp classic featuring Clea DuVall and Natasha Lyonne as two lesbian teens finding love in an unexpected place – conversion camp! 5:30pm.

Lessons and social dancing take over this South Austin honky-tonk courtesy of Neon Rainbows and Country Fried Dance. 7pm.

Jess Dobkin’s Toast Thursday 16, Springdale Station

A part of Fusebox Festival, this one-night-only showcase bursts at the seams with queer talent. Nikki DaVaughn emcees, p1nkstar takes over the DJ booth, and after all the performances from folks like Chris Grace, Mikeala Rodriguez, Mama Duke, Andie Flores (featured in this week’s cover story!), and many, many more, there’ll be cake! 8pm.

Weird Science Theater Presents: The Letterboxd “Film Festival” Drag Show Thursday 16, Elysium

Hosts Tangelo and Jack Rabid offer one for the cinephiles as performers Gatorr Gorr, Munster Mash, Stellar Manx, Flex Brojas, Gemma Nye, and Mars Morningstar tribute cult classics. 10:30pm.
