Will Anyone Be Punished for What Happened in Uvalde?
On Wednesday, after a three-week trial and seven hours of deliberations, a jury found former Uvalde school officer Adrian Gonzales not guilty of 29 counts of abandoning or endangering children. Gonzales was the first to arrive at Robb Elementary on that terrible day, May 24, 2022, when an eighteen-year-old with an AR-15 committed one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. Prosecutors alleged that Gonzales’s failure to act—standing back and waiting for cover upon learning the shooter had arrived at the school, rather than engaging him—amounted to criminal negligence. The defense countered that Gonzales never saw the shooter, and that the prosecution was unfairly punishing one man for a broader failure. The outcome was as expected.
